Writing Modern Legal English

"The chief virtue that language can have is clarity." – Hippocrates

A one-day seminar meant to help Norwegian lawyers adapt to the new and significant changes in the style of modern legal English.

Old-style legal English has been described by Mark Fisher of the BBC as "Unbearably, maddeningly, mind-numbingly pompous." Admirers of modern legal English agree with him. New style is the English written in the modern commercial world - by our clients. It is supported by the English and US judiciary, bar associations, and influential legal writing experts such as Bryan Garner and Kenneth Adams.

By the end of the seminar, participants will be able to recognise old-style text and turn it into something clear and fresh.

Hvem passer kurset for?

Kurset vil hjelpe advokater og jurister med å modernisere det juridiske skriftspråket sitt.

Too many lawyers believe that it is essential to legal English that one write as pompously as possible, using words and phrases that have long since disappeared from normal English discourse

Hon. Antonin Scalia U.S. Supreme Court
